Most drivers pick a body shop once every several years, under stress, immediately after something bad has happened. That is not a great environment for careful evaluation, so it helps to know what actually separates shops before you need one.
Start with certification. ASE certification indicates technicians have been independently tested on their craft, and I-CAR training keeps a shop current with the materials and repair procedures that modern vehicles require. Vehicle construction has changed substantially in the last decade; a shop that has not kept up with it is repairing today's cars with yesterday's methods.
Ask how estimates work. A shop should provide a free written estimate and be willing to walk you through the line items — what is being replaced versus repaired, and why. If you cannot get a clear explanation of what you are paying for before the work starts, that will not improve once your car is disassembled.
Ask about insurance handling. Any shop can say they work with insurers; the more useful question is whether they will communicate directly with your adjuster, document damage properly, and file supplements when hidden damage turns up. That is the difference between handing off a claim and managing one yourself.
Pay attention to communication in the first conversation, because it predicts the rest. Shops that explain things clearly before you are a customer generally keep doing it afterward. Read the reviews for mentions of updates, timelines, and honesty rather than just star counts.
