Every vehicle carries a paint code, usually on a sticker in the door jamb, and drivers reasonably assume that code is all a shop needs. It is the starting point, not the answer.
The reason is that paint changes. A vehicle that has spent eight Pennsylvania summers outdoors does not wear the same shade it left the factory with — ultraviolet exposure, oxidation, and washing all shift the color slightly. Two cars with the same code and different histories will not match each other, let alone a freshly mixed batch.
Factory variance compounds this. Manufacturers produce the same color across multiple plants and multiple batches, with documented variants for a single code. A correct match means identifying which variant your vehicle actually wears, not just which code it was assigned.
This is why shops spray test cards. A sample of the mixed color is sprayed, cured, and held against the vehicle in different lighting before a single panel is touched. Metallic and pearl finishes make this more demanding still, because the orientation of the metallic flake changes how the color reads depending on the angle you view it from.
The final piece is blending. Rather than painting a repaired panel edge to edge and leaving a hard line against its neighbor, the new color is faded into the adjacent panels so the transition is gradual and invisible to the eye. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a repair is noticeable.
